What OnlyFans is
OnlyFans is a subscription platform where creators run a profile that fans pay to follow, sell pay-per-view messages, and go live for tips or a ticket price. It pays creators directly and, through a referral link, pays creators for other creators they bring in. Its English-language blog teaches creators how to use the product and shows a spread of creators in comedy, sports, fitness and podcasts, and the company also runs OFTV, a free video service, and an OF Merch clothing line. Creators can run a paid subscription profile or a free profile, and the blog's guides describe settings for both. The blog is OnlyFans' own teaching material rather than its terms, so it covers how the tools work more than what the company charges. A creator weighing the platform gets a clear picture of the earning tools and the promotion playbook, and the referral rate is stated.
How earning works
Subscriptions are the base. A creator with a paid profile sets a price and can run offers on it: the promotion guide says that "offering free trials or first-month discounts to potential new fans can really pay off", with the setting under Settings, "Subscription price and bundles". A free trial takes an offer limit, an expiration and a trial length. A first-month discount takes an offer limit, an expiration and a discount percentage. That lets a creator lower the entry cost for new fans without cutting the price for everyone.
Pay-per-view messages are the second line. The promotion guide treats them as a collaboration tool as much as a sales one: instead of posting a collab, "you and another OnlyFans creator can offer your content as a PPV Message", which it says can let both reach twice as many fans "while splitting the earnings." Creators can also make content together, tag one another, and schedule the post to go live at the same time, so two audiences see it at once.
Livestreams are the third, and the blog's guide to going live is detailed. A creator can stream from a phone or a webcam, in portrait or landscape, through a mobile or desktop browser, and the blog suggests Safari on iPhone and Chrome on Android. Before starting, the creator chooses under "Available to" which subscribers can watch and which are excluded, and writes a short description. Money comes in two ways, as the guide read in October 2026. "Creators with free OnlyFans profiles have the option to set an entry price as low as $5 to access their stream", so a free profile can still sell a ticketed show. And "All creators can set a tip goal (and optional reward) for their stream", with the choice of showing the goal and the running tip total to viewers or hiding them. A colored circle on screen shows connection strength, red for weak, yellow for average and green for strong.
For more control, the blog says OBS is fully compatible with OnlyFans' livestreaming. A creator copies a stream key from Settings, Streaming, picks OnlyFans.com as the service in OBS, adds video and audio sources, and keeps the OnlyFans window open beside OBS to watch and answer comments. Streams can be scheduled in the Queue, and fans "will automatically receive a reminder as the start of your stream approaches", which helps a creator who streams on a regular timetable. The blog points creators to its Community Guidelines on enabling livestreaming before they start.
Co-streaming adds a partner. Both creators must be subscribed to each other's profiles, and the host's Streaming settings must allow co-streaming requests from subscribers. The host starts the stream, the guest joins as a viewer, and the host selects the three dots by the guest's name to invite them; the guest can also ask to join from the host's live profile. The blog says co-streams "allow both creators to reach new fans, showcase their talents, and earn money", and that "viewers can tip one or both creators during a co-stream."
The fourth line is referrals. In October 2026 the promotion guide says: "By sharing your referral link with prospective new creators, you could earn 5% of their OnlyFans earnings for their first year on the platform." The link is found under the Statements menu with the "Referrals" button, and referrals are tracked on the Statistics page. That makes OnlyFans a creator-referral program as well as a fan platform: the reward comes from the platform, on the referred creator's earnings, for a year.
The blog is frank that traffic is the creator's job. Its promotion guide starts with cross-promotion: put the OnlyFans or landing page URL in social media bios, announce the launch with a post or story, and share short clips or samples to show followers what a subscription gets them. It suggests forums such as Reddit and topic blogs for reaching fans with matching interests, and it warns creators to follow each platform's community guidelines and never to spam, or they "may find yourself muted, unfollowed, blocked, or banned." It also recommends gathering every profile, site, social account and store into one landing page.
Watermarking is built in. Under Settings, "Privacy and safety", a creator can switch on automatic watermarks for photos, videos or both, and customize the text and position. The default watermark is the profile URL, OnlyFans.com/username, which the blog says protects copyright and "tells people exactly where they can subscribe to see more." The blog also points creators to automated welcome messages and scheduled content as retention tools, and to its Creator Center for a fuller guide.
OFTV is a separate showcase. The blog calls it "the ad-free, subscription-free video platform by OnlyFans", carrying original series and "exclusive videos from your favorite OnlyFans creators", free to watch with no sign-up at www.of.tv or in the OFTV app. Its shows include LMAOF, Perfect Set and Smash City, and it covers reality TV, cooking, competition shows and stand-up. For creators whose work suits a general audience, it is another way in front of viewers.
Money and rules
The one rate the blog states is the referral reward, a percentage of a referred creator's OnlyFans earnings for their first year. On the selling side, the stated limits are the ones above: a minimum entry price for live shows on free profiles, tip goals for all creators, and creator-set trials and first-month discounts. A creator's own revenue share, payout threshold, schedule and methods are not in these blog posts, so they have to come from the platform's official terms and help pages. Livestreaming is subject to the Community Guidelines the blog links, and promotion elsewhere must follow each outside platform's rules.
Who it suits and who it does not
OnlyFans suits a creator who already has an audience on social media and wants a place to sell it subscriptions, PPV messages and live shows. The live tools are strong for a regular streamer: ticketed shows on free profiles, tip goals, OBS support, a schedule with automatic reminders, and co-streams to share audiences. A creator who knows other creators can add the first-year referral reward the blog describes.
It is harder for a new creator with no following, because the blog's growth advice rests on outside promotion, collaboration and landing pages rather than on discovery inside the platform. The blog also features comedians, athletes and other mainstream creators, so an adult creator should treat OFTV and the merch line as the company's brand activity rather than a channel built for adult accounts.
