What the business is

Chat Line Jobs is the recruitment site of an adult chat line based in Manchester. It hires self-employed operators to take inbound calls from people looking for adult conversation, and it pays them per minute of talk time. The company details on its About page name RJ Media LLP, established in 1986, a family-run business in the telecommunication services industry. Applying is free according to the home page: the application is an online form, and the site says there are no hidden fees or deductions from what an operator makes.

The site describes itself as the UK's busiest chat line and says it has served millions of customers over nearly four decades. It started as a small family business, in its own words. The work is aimed at operators in the UK, but the About page says it welcomes operators from around the world with flexible payment options.

How earning works

An operator provides adult conversation by phone to callers who want companionship, entertainment and adult chat. The Work From Home page puts it this way: "As an operator, you'll engage in conversations with callers on our busy adult chat line." The site adds that the conversations are typically adult, though not exclusively. The FAQ goes a little further and says the majority of conversations are of an adult nature, that not all calls are explicit, and that an operator should be comfortable with adult conversations. Training covers this, according to the FAQ, which lists conversation techniques, using the company's technology, safety and boundaries, maximizing earnings and understanding callers as the subjects. The same FAQ says an operator is always in control and can end any call at any time.

The pay basis is stated plainly: "You'll be paid per minute of talk time." There is no hourly wage and no fixed shift. The home page lists "0 Minimum Hours", and the FAQ repeats that there are absolutely no minimum hour requirements: log on for 30 minutes or 8 hours, as suits the operator. There are no set shifts or schedules either. An operator logs on when ready to work and logs off when done, and the site calls this true self-employment.

Callers reach operators through the company's own adult websites and chat line. Each operator gets a profile on the company's adult websites so callers can find them, and the operator can use their own photo or let the company choose one. The site says calls arrive 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The FAQ adds that traditionally busier times tend to be evenings (7pm-11pm) and weekends, while there are earning opportunities at all times of day and night. It also presents the work as a side job: many operators use it to supplement a main income, and students can apply.

The home page tells applicants that most operators start earning within 24 hours. It sets out the route in 3 steps. First comes the online application form. Next a recruitment agent contacts the applicant to discuss the opportunity and answer questions. Then the operator signs a self-employment contract and provides payment details. The Apply Now page says applications are usually reviewed within a few hours during business hours, and that most successful applicants are taking calls within 24 hours. These are the company's own timings.

Operators use their own phone. In the UK that can be a landline or a mobile. Outside the UK, the FAQ says a VoIP phone works so long as it has a UK number assigned to it and a reliable signal or connection. Operators who have none of these can ask the company to help set one up. Calls are inbound only: the FAQ states that operators will not make outbound calls with the service. On the phone bill, it notes that incoming calls don't usually use an operator's minutes or cost anything, and tells operators to check with their provider.

Identity is protected. According to the FAQ, callers never see the operator's real phone number, real name or any identifying information, and an operator can use a stage name and create a persona. The site says it does not require a VPN. A personal earnings portal shows what an operator has earned and updates in real time, available at any hour. Each operator also has access to a dedicated member of staff for queries, and the About page mentions dedicated support staff for questions or concerns.

Money and rules

Pay is a per-minute revenue share on talk time, sent by bank transfer on a weekly cycle. The core payment line on the Work From Home page reads: "Payments are made weekly - directly to your nominated account." The home page words it as revenue share paid to a nominated bank account, mentions direct transfer to a UK bank account, and says the share is processed weekly and in most cases received within 7 days. The About page adds that operators from other countries are offered flexible payment options.

The site does not publish its per-minute rate. The FAQ says the revenue share rate is the one agreed with the operator, and that this agreed rate is what is paid: "No surprise deductions, no admin fees, no hidden costs." The claim of "Some of the highest per-minute rates in the UK" is the site's own and comes with no figure attached, so the rate is something to settle with the recruitment agent before signing the contract. The earnings portal lists call duration, dates and earnings per call, along with payment history and pending payments.

The requirements it does state:

  • Age. The application form carries a checkbox confirming the applicant is 18 years of age or older, and asks for a date of birth and country of residence.
  • Status. Operators are self-employed. The form has a checkbox saying the applicant is responsible for their own tax and national insurance, or the relevant tax declaration for their country of residence. The FAQ adds that a UK operator earning above the threshold needs to register with HMRC as self-employed and file a self-assessment return, and that operators elsewhere follow their own country's tax rules.
  • Nature of the work. Another checkbox confirms the applicant understands the work is adult and conversations can be of an adult nature. A third covers consent to personal data processing under the privacy policy.
  • Equipment. A phone and internet access, and the ability to hold conversations. The Work From Home page says becoming an operator needs minimal investment.

The company says it is UK registered and based in Manchester, operating under UK business law. Its headcount is given loosely: one line invites applicants to join hundreds of operators already earning from home, another speaks of thousands, and both are marketing lines.

Who it suits and who it does not

This suits someone who wants a phone job with no schedule: a parent working around school hours, a student, someone with health considerations, or a person already employed who wants a side income. The About page also notes that many operators have been with the company for years, some for decades. A UK-based operator with a landline or mobile has the simplest setup. An operator abroad can take part with a VoIP phone holding a UK number, so the invitation to applicants from other countries is explicit.

It is a weaker fit for anyone who wants to know the rate before applying, because pay is agreed individually in the conversation with a recruitment agent. Earnings follow talk time alone, so income depends on how many calls arrive and how long they last. An operator should also be comfortable with adult conversation, since the company describes most calls that way, and with the self-employed status, which makes tax and national insurance the operator's own responsibility. It is a phone service only, built on inbound voice calls.
