What the business is
PSO Phone Sex Operator Jobs is the recruiting site of a US phone sex company that calls itself "female owned and operated" and says it has "been in business for over 20yrs". It hires phone sex operators as independent contractors, works through a dispatch system, and takes applicants who live in the United States. What it asks of an applicant is a government photo ID, a private phone line and a computer. The about page describes the workplace it aims for as a "friendly, comfortable, no drama working environment for our phone mates". The work is done from home on the operator's own phone, so this is a job for someone in the US who wants calls sent to her rather than someone who wants to build her own audience.
How earning works here
PSO is a dispatch company. Calls are not picked up blind. The positions page says "Since you will be working for a dispatch company you will always know what the caller is looking for before you begin each call". The about page describes the mix of calls the company dispatches as "everything from taboo conversation to vanilla phone sex, to therapy type calls", and it says the company has "established clientele that have been calling us for many years". That is the site's own description of its customer base. The same page says the company takes "great pride in keeping our staff and clients satisfied and happy".
The operator's side of the job is a phone line plus a chat window. The operator installs a chat application on a computer or phone, and the pages are explicit that it is for "dispatch communication only" and not visual. The about and positions pages name Skype, while the home page and the application page name Google Chat, so the pages disagree on the tool. The positions page describes it simply as "used for company communication". Dispatch tells the operator what a call is about before it starts, and the call runs over her private phone line. The about page says that line must not have an unknown number or "privacy call block" feature on it, and the positions page accepts "a private phone line or cell phone with no private call block on it".
Scheduling is the main freedom. The about page says "You do NOT have to work a set schedule. You can log in whenever you like." The same page adds a condition: to stay active, the operator must tell the company when she will be available next to take calls. The positions page puts a number on it, saying the login availability must be "a minimum of 12 hours per week". So hours are flexible, but a floor exists.
The role description on the home page is plain. The operator provides the caller "confidentiality when discussing his or her fantasies" while he or she feels comfortable and not judged. The page says an operator may be described as an actress, a chat or phone sex operator, and even a companion to some because of the bond callers form. It also states that "Customer service skills are the most important tool you can have" and "Repeat callers are important for consistent income". That second line is the nearest thing to an earnings explanation on the pages: income builds when callers come back, so how well the operator handles the conversation matters. The role is summed up as providing for "the sexual needs of your caller and not yourself" while being friendly, self-confident and creative.
The positions page lists the personal qualities the company wants. A person should be a good listener with a friendly, non-judgmental personality and a great grasp of the English language. She should be creative enough to put together a story around a requested fetish. The page says a client "is paying you for their fantasy not necessarily for your personal opinion". Some calls need the operator to do all the talking, others call for more listening, and the operator must be outgoing and confident about leading the conversation, or the page says this type of work will not suit her.
On the fetish-content side, the page says "We get lots of fetish calls so again you must be open-minded", and the about page requires applicants to be "ok with fetish and out of the ordinary calls". Every requirements list on the site repeats the same two lines, an open mind and creativity about subject matter, and being fine with unusual calls, so open-mindedness is the content expectation the company sets for its operators. The chat application itself is for dispatch only, so the paid work described is calls.
Money and rules
Operators work as independent contractors: the home page describes the job as "an independent contractor pso position". Pay is issued in the operator's legal name, since the application page says "Your paychecks will also be made out to the name on your photo ID". The job pages do not publish a pay rate, a pay schedule or a payment method.
The requirements as written:
- Be 18 or older. The pages say operators of various ages work there, "including a mature age group of 60+" on the about and home pages and "50+" on the positions and application pages, and add "We have a high demand for mature women as well".
- Be a resident of the United States. The home page words it as a "female resident", and the application page carries the line "Hiring females from all over the USA !".
- Hold a valid government issued photo ID and be able to email a copy. The application asks for a scanned upload at the end and says the ID "will be used as proof that you are 18 years or older".
- Have a private phone line, your own PC with internet access and a private place to work.
- Be computer literate at a basic level (copy and paste, instant messaging, typing in English).
- Be available at least 12 hours a week.
The application form asks for full name, email, date of birth, gender, country, state or province, zip code, phone number, time zone, best time to contact, the date you could start, and whether you have ever been convicted of a crime, with an explanation field. It asks for a street address and city as well, and whether you can provide a valid photo ID. The time zone choices run from Hawaii to Newfoundland, and the contact question offers morning, afternoon, evening or night. Two free-text questions close the form, one on your computer habits and one inviting you to tell the company more about yourself. The form's country and gender fields offer more choices than the hiring rule allows, including Canadian provinces and a male option, but the requirements on the same page still say United States resident, and the home page says female.
Who it suits and who it does not
PSO suits a woman in the US who wants calls dispatched to her and does not want to market herself. The briefing before each call is useful for anyone who prefers to know the topic in advance, including a fetish topic she can prepare a story around. The 12 hour weekly floor with otherwise free hours suits a person who can log in on her own schedule from a quiet room at home, and the site's stated demand for mature women makes it relevant to an older applicant.
It suits less well anyone outside the United States, since residency is a stated requirement. It is not for an operator who wants to choose her callers or her themes, because the company says to expect fetish calls, and the briefing is described as telling her the topic in advance. It also asks for a copy of a government ID as part of the application, and paychecks are made out to the name on it. And with pay terms kept off the job pages, the rate is something an applicant learns from the company during hiring, so this is hard to compare with employers that print a rate card.
